The campaign “The Biggest Lie About Alzheimer's”, from the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, has managed to raise a total of €373,795This fundraising effort was made possible thanks to donations from individuals and companies, exceeding the initial goal of €250,000 and demonstrating, once again, the public's commitment to finding a cure for Alzheimer's.
The objective of the campaign, starring the actor and director Paco León, has consisted of debunking the idea that Alzheimer's is invincible and demystifying other claims related to the disease, such as its relationship with genetics, risk factors or treatments to slow its progress, as well as claiming the importance of investing in research.
The money raised will be allocated to the Beta – AARC study (Beta Alzheimer at Risk Cohort), running since 2021 by the Barcelonaßeta Brain Research Center (BBRC). The research project focuses on the factors that influence the onset of the disease and the detection of biomarkers to identify people at increased risk of developing Alzheimer's before the first symptoms appear. Specifically, a new cohort is being analyzed that will include 200 participants between 55 and 80 years old who experience subjective impairment of memory or other cognitive abilities, such as attention, planning ability and orientation.
“With this study we want to find those signs that allow us to detect whether this person has a higher or lower risk of suffering from the disease long before the damage is irreversible, and that this allows us to propose effective preventive and therapeutic actions.”, explains the Dr. Oriol Grau, researcher and head of the Clinical Research and Risk Factors Group of the BBRC, the group responsible for the Beta-AARC study.
“The Biggest Lie About Alzheimer's” has had the collaboration of companies such as EDM, RTVE and Metros Ligeros de Madrid, among others.
