The Pasqual Maragall Foundation and our research center, the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC), have published the 2020 Activity Report; a compilation of the most important information on the scientific, social and economic activities of the two entities.
Under the motto «2020, a key year for science»The document is a testimony of a few special months for our sector, “for all of us who are dedicated to science, for people suffering from Alzheimer's and their families and in general for everyone who is experiencing this situation of uncertainty resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic,” explains the Director of the Foundation, Arcadi Navarro. In his first speech of the Report, Navarro highlights the role of science throughout 2020: “The pandemic has confirmed the value of research. Thanks to science, we are facing the most quickly resolved health problem in the history of humanity.”
A year in data
Despite the circumstances, science did not stop in 2020: more than 1,300 visits were made to participants in the various scientific projects of the BBRC Alzheimer's Prevention Program, more than 4,600 biological samples were processed and more than 600 MRI acquisitions were performed.
In 2020, the Foundation also launched 19 therapeutic groups in which 158 caregivers of people with Alzheimer's participated in Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, Tenerife, Seville, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Vigo and Valencia. Following the health situation caused by Covid-19, the groups moved to an online format in May, and during the period of home confinement, between March and April, 207 individual emotional support interventions were carried out telematically for caregivers.
All this work was made possible thanks to the competitive projects obtained, and the contributions of more than 45,000 members, donors and collaborators, the companies on the patronage council chaired by the "la Caixa" Foundation and the more than 80 charitable initiatives that were carried out throughout the year. In the financial section of the Report you can consult the summary of the income and expenses of the Foundation and the BBRC, which are subject to an annual audit of their accounts.
