Diana Garrigosa Awards

The figure of Diana Garrigosa is essential to understanding the mission and vision of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation.

In memory of her figure and her legacy, the Diana Garrigosa Awards recognise people over 65 years of age with an outstanding personal and professional career who are an example of active and committed seniority in the defence of social values and rights.

2024 Edition

The third edition of the Diana Garrigosa Awards 2024, recognized the writer and journalist Rosa Montero the singer and composer Miguel Ríos.

Rosa Montero is a Spanish writer and journalist, author of successful novels, as well as outstanding essays and short stories. She began her university studies in psychology and later in journalism. From the beginning (1976), she began working for the newspaper "El País", where she was editor-in-chief of the Sunday supplement, conducting more than 2,000 interviews throughout her career with such influential figures as Richard Nixon and Indira Gandhi. Montero has been awarded on numerous occasions, both for her journalistic work and for her literary works, which have been translated into nearly thirty languages. In them, with her intimate and reflective style, she has addressed topics such as identity, memory and the human condition.

Miguel Rios is a pioneering rock musician and singer-songwriter in Spain. He began his musical career in the 1960s and, ten years later, achieved his greatest success with the song “El Himno a la Alegría”, a fusion of classical music and rock. In the 1970s and 1980s, his fame was consolidated with songs such as "Bienvenidos" and "Santa Lucía". Ríos has also stood out for his critical vision and his social commitment in defense of democracy, freedom and human rights. In May 2022, he launched the Miguel Ríos Foundation for Rock and Solidarity with the aim of disseminating knowledge and research into urban music and rock culture and promoting solidarity activities that offer opportunities to disadvantaged groups through culture.

The Diana Garrigosa Awards 2023 were presented to Victoria Camps and Iñaki Gabilondo.

Victoria Camps is a distinguished philosopher and professor of moral and political philosophy at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She has been a senator and permanent councilor of the Council of State, making important contributions to the field of ethics and morality. Her research covers bioethics, the defense of the role of women, the welfare state and the value of care in society. She has served on several ethics committees in hospitals and currently chairs the board of trustees of the Víctor Grífols Foundation, which promotes bioethics through interdisciplinary dialogue.

Iñaki Gabilondo is one of the most influential journalists in Spain, with a career spanning more than 50 years in media such as Cadena SER, Cadena COPE, Antena 3 TV, Cuatro and CNN+. He has directed and presented emblematic programmes such as "Hoy por hoy" on Cadena SER, "Un tiempo nuevo" on Telecinco and "Noticias Cuatro". Gabilondo has stood out for his social commitment, addressing issues of social justice, equal opportunities, human rights and a culture of peace. His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including six Ondas and the Creu de Sant Jordi, and he has received honorary doctorate cause from several universities.

In its first edition, the Diana Garrigosa Awards were awarded to Manuela Carmena and Fernando Onega for their active seniority, outstanding career and social commitment.

Manuela Carmena, born in Madrid in 1944, has had a distinguished career as a labour lawyer, judge and mayor of Madrid (2015-2019). Since her youth, she has shown a strong commitment to democratic values. As a judge, she promoted Judges for Democracy, promoting judicial independence and human rights. In 1986, she received the National Human Rights Award for her work in favour of social justice. As mayor, she implemented the project "Madrid, a city friendly to the elderly".

Fernando Onega has stood out for his committed work in the journalistic field and his defense of the rights of the elderly. He was press director for President Adolfo Suárez, has directed news programs on SER, Cadena Cope and Onda Cero, and has been a presenter on TVE, Antena 3 and Telecinco. In 2019 he launched "65ymás" to raise awareness and defend the role of older people, achieving a great impact with 8 million readers in 2021.
