He holds a PhD in Biology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, is Professor of Genetics and ICREA professor and researcher in the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University. He is Director of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center. He has devoted himself to the field of research in population genetics, molecular evolution, the relationships between genomes and phenomes, and evolutionary medicine. In January 2016, he was appointed Secretary of Universities and Research in the Department of Knowledge and Enterprise of the Generalitat of Catalonia, a position he held until July 2018.
